Winter Fire Safety!!

Carbon Monoxide

Often called the invisible killer, carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless gas created when fuels such as gasoline, wood, coal, propane, etc. do not burn completely. In the home, heating and cooking equipment that burn fuel are potential sources of CO. Carbon monoxide incidents are more common during the winter months, and in residential properties.

Winter storms

Most of the U.S. is at risk for winter storms, which can cause dangerous and sometimes life-threatening conditions. Blinding wind-driven snow, extreme cold, icy road conditions, downed trees and power lines can all wreak havoc on our daily schedules. Home fires occur more in the winter than in any other season, and heating equipment is involved in one of every six reported home fires, and one in every five home fire deaths.
Generators

Portable generators are useful during power outages, however, many homeowners are unaware that the improper use of portable generators can be risky. The most common dangers associated with portable generators are carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, electrical shock or electrocution, and fire hazards. According to a 2013 Consumer Product Safety Commission report, half of the generator-related deaths happened in the four coldest months of the year, November through February, and portable generators were involved in the majority of carbon monoxide deaths involving engine-driven tools.
Candles

December is the peak time of year for home candle fires; the top two days for home candle fires are Christmas and Christmas Eve. Each year between 2013-2017, an average of 7,900 home candle fires were reported each year.
Electrical

Electrical home fires are a leading cause of home fires in the U.S. Roughly half of all home electrical fires involved electrical distribution or lighting equipment, while nearly another half involved other known types of equipment like washer or dryer fans, and portable or stationary space heaters. More statistics on electrical fires.

Why “You Are Appreciated” Is So Important, and What it Actually Means:

Rural mental health and suicide awareness has been a major focus for the Dixie Firefighters Association, and the state of Kentucky for the past year and a half. The suicide epidemic, to describe it in short, has plagued our world for years. Farmers, first responders, and frontline workers are choosing to take their life due to circumstances such as financial trouble, bad harvest, or tough times.

The stories about these instances are heartbreaking, and scary. Stories of children losing their parent, and spouses losing loved ones. The three words “life is good” may not always seem like a truth, and we must be able to accept that. However, our frontline personnel must be able to realize they are APPRECIATED!! Everyone’s life is a prize. Our frontline and emergency personnel, including farmers, choose to be some of the most courageous and sacrificial people, giving up time and financial flexibility.

Appreciation is something we all desire, especially when we devote our life to something that benefits all people. Frontline and emergency personnel, however, are selfless, and never ask for recognition. Although they are selfless and humble, they deserve appreciation. The FFA Creed says “…for I know the joys and discomforts of agricultural life and hold an inborn fondness for those associations, which even in hours of discouragement, I cannot deny.” This excerpt reigns true throughout all of life and shows us that we must accept the discomfort of life but display our fondness and appreciation for those who work in the roughest of situations everyday.

“You Are Appreciated” and the challenge coin means that we appreciate our frontline and emergency workers for ALL they do, and we are forever in debt to their countless instances of perseverance and bravery.

We hope you join us in displaying our appreciation to all our frontline and emergency personnel and join us in the fight against the suicide epidemic. Suicide is not the answer.

These challenge coins are being sold by the Dixie Firefighters Association for only five dollars. We encourage you to purchase one, and pass it on, it could save someones life.

If you are experiencing unwanted or suicidal thoughts, or experiencing episodes of depression, please contact the National Suicide Hotline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or please reach out to someone. Remember, there is help, and that you are appreciated and loved.
